5 Tips to Take Your Photography To the Next Level
Professional photographers are not the only people who can take great pictures. You can, too. With a little practice and following the tips I share here, you will be well on your way to creating better than average photos.
EXPENSIVE CAMERAS DON’T MAKE YOU A BETTER PHOTOGRAPHER.
The best camera to shoot with is the one you have with you when you are ready to capture a moment. Be it your camera phone, point & shoot, mirrorless or DSLR, they all do the same thing. They make pictures. You are the one who gives your photos life and vision. Learn how to use the device you currently own really well, then upgrade to a better camera.
CARRY YOUR CAMERA WITH YOU EVERY DAY.
There is nothing worse than missing a great shot, milestone or moment because you left your camera at home. Make it a habit to carrying your camera with you everywhere you go. I cannot tell you how many times I have missed an amazing sunset or cloud formation because I didn’t have a camera with me. This is hands down the most important things you can do to improve your photographic eye.
PHOTOGRAPH THE SIMPLE THINGS IN YOUR LIFE.
Great photography stories are built off of your small, daily rituals and familiar surroundings. Look at your home and your yard for inspiration. If you always shoot the flowers in your yard in color, consider photographing them in black and white and focus on composition and angles. How about you try taking pictures inside your home from the perspective of an ant. What used to be uninteresting and ordinary is actually the best thing you can photograph and grow your skills. If you can master the everyday, you can master any kind of photography style.
LET FLICKR AND INSTAGRAM BE YOUR INSPIRATION.
Flickr and Instagram are treasure troves of photography inspiration. If you are not sure what kind of photography you are interested in pursuing, check out all the great pictures professional and amateur photographers are sharing on a daily basis. Here are a few Instagram accounts I am loving right now: houselarsbuilt, kidsandthecity, lotuscarroll, annebecca and trytheworld.
LEARN THE RULE OF THIRDS, THEN BREAK THE RULE.
To understand the Rule of Thirds, imagine your image is in nine equal parts horizontally and vertically. The idea behind this is you place points of interest where the lines intersect. Now, you will create lovely images by following the rule of thirds, but you will also create killer photos when you break the rule of thirds. Experimentation is what photography is all about.
If you are participating in our daily photo challenges, you are well on your way to creating one heck of a body of photographic work. This is journey and choosing to shoot every day is the best thing you can do for yourself. I am glad to be on this journey with you.
